Our soul winning verse from the Word of God today is Romans 6:23 which reads: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Our soul winning quote today is from Matthew Henry. He said: “It is our duty not to not only hold fast, but to hold forth the Word of life; not only to hold fast for our own benefit, but to hold it forth for the benefit of others, to hold it forth as the candlestick holds forth the candle, which makes it appear to advantage all around, or as the luminaries of the heavens, which shed their influences far and wide.”
Our soul winning devotional is part 46 of our series titled “What Evangelism Is” from Dave Earley and David Wheeler.
Evangelism Is…Winning Three Battles So Jesus Can Win the War
Win People to Church
Eighty-two percent of the unchurched are at least “somewhat” likely to attend church if they are invited…More than eight out of 10 of the unchurched said they would come to church if they were invited…The process is pretty basic. If we invite them, they will come.
After winning someone to yourself, usually the second major victory that must be won is winning the lost person to church. Now understand me clearly, when I use the word church, I am not talking about a building. Jesus did not pour out His life on the cross for some building with a steeple on the roof. Jesus died for a group of people who would be rescued from hell and be passionate about following Him. He died for His bride.
When I speak of winning a lost person to church, I am talking about leading the not-yet-believer to a gathering of God’s people who are seriously studying the Bible and actively trying to obey it. Winning your friend to church may mean inviting your lost friend to check out Jesus by visiting a small group of believers who meet to study the Bible regularly, or to meet you at a Sunday morning worship experience that meets in a public school, or to ride with you to a weekly gathering of a couple of your friends who discuss life and and the Bible in a coffee shop.
The goal is simple: get the nonbeliever around other genuine Christians so the nonbeliever can see the love and power of God at work in human lives. The goal is also to get the lost person in an environment where God the Holy Spirit can speak to them through the Word of God. Often they simply must feel like they belong before they can believe.
Again, our job is helping the nonbeliever take ministeps toward full-on commitment to Jesus Christ. Along the way they will go through a process of thinking that will incorporate increased trust in the Bible and enhanced desire to have the same type of relationship with Jesus they are seeing in you and your Christian friends. Some of their preconversion steps may be as follows:
1. This gathering is OK.
2. I like the fact that these people are just people yet somehow positively different.
3. Jesus has made a difference in their lives.
4. I wonder if Jesus can make that type of difference in my life also.
5. I like the encouragement I get here to pursue a relationship with Jesus.
6. I feel accepted and even loved.
7. The Bible is not impossible to understand.
8. The Bible says some important things.
9. What the Bible says about life fits my experience.
