Evangelism is Following the Example of Jesus, Part 4 (The Soul-Winning Motivator #34)

Our soul winning passage from the Word of God today is Mark 16:15 which reads: “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Our soul winning quote today is from John Piper: “Don’t wait for a feeling or love in order to share Christ with a stranger. You already love your heavenly Father, and you know that this stranger is created by Him, but separated from Him, so take those first steps in evangelism because you love God. It is not primarily out of compassion for humanity that we share our faith or pray for the lost; it is first of all, love for God.”

In our previous broadcast we looked at the fifth and sixth key aspects of the Jesus model for evangelism. Today we will look at the seventh and eighth key aspects. Our soul winning devotional is part 17 of our series titled “What Evangelism Is” from Dave Earley and David Wheeler.

Evangelism is following the example of Jesus.

7. Jesus Pointed Out Her Sin
The woman had asked Jesus about giving her the living water. In response to her request, Jesus first confronted her regarding her sin. We soon find out that this woman’s primary sin was immorality. She had gone through several husbands and was now cohabiting with a man who was not her husband. Pointedly but politely, Jesus moved the conversation to her sin when He mentioned her husband. When she tried to deflect it, He spoke directly about her obvious need.

We all know that immorality is breaking the Seventh Commandment: “You shall not commit adultery.” Still Jesus did not yell at her or whack her on the head with a Bible. He simply raised the issue of her husband(s) and reminded her of her present sinful situation.

Often in our eagerness to help lost people get into heaven, we fail to point out sin in their lives. The reason people are lost is because of sin. The reason people will not get to heaven is because of sin. The reason they are empty, lonely, and frustrated is because of sin. If we want people to be truly saved, we must address the issue of their sin. No one senses their need to be saved until they understand that they are lost.

8 Jesus Refused to Let Her Off the Hook
When Jesus pointed out this woman’s sin, she jumped a step in understanding and observed, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.” But then she immediately got offtrack again going back to the age-old Jewish-Samaritan issue of where to worship, Mount Gerazim or Jerusalem. He carefully corrected her focus, moving it from where to worship to the more important issue, who to worship.

Lost people often miss the key issues. Our job as effective evangelists is patiently to pull them back on track, back to the core issues of the gospel.

In our next broadcast, we will look at the ninth and tenth key aspects of the Jesus model for evangelism.
